THE GOD SHELF

In ancient Egyptian times, most of life was attributed to over 700 different gods. There were gods associated with the Nile River, animal gods, a crop god, sky god, moon god, and various sun gods. Moses, as a child raised in the palace of Pharaoh, was schooled in the Egyptian arts, and philosophies, including the many gods they worshiped. When he came of age, it must have been a remarkable revelation for him to discover there was only one God, the God of Israel, who is everywhere, in all places at all times. A number of years ago, I was talking to a WEC missionary who had served in Japan for many years. As we spoke, he told me that sometimes when you speak to Asian people about Christ, they become very interested. Some have even gone to a local church and they say, “Yes, I want Jesus in my life.” Many people, as part of their Shintoism and Buddhism religion, will have set up in their homes what they call a ‘god shelf’. A god shelf is a little like an altar where many symbols of the gods they worship are placed. The people who decide they want Jesus in their lives simply make room on their god shelf for something that symbolizes Christ, most often a cross.
