Christian Doctrine – Part 9: “The Holiness of God”

The God who reveals himself to us in Scripture is a moral being. Some of the terms used to describe the moral nature of God our righteousness, holiness, justice, mercy, grace, love, and truthfulness. In considering the holiness of God and focusing on the basic meaning of the term “holiness” one learns that the word carries the idea of “separateness” or “apartness.” This means that God’s holiness separates him and differentiates him from things created. It means that God is infinitely exalted above His creation. Holiness in this sense of the term is not a distinct attribute of God at all. But is a description of all that God is and does. It is the very essence of His being.
