Accident slows traffic on I-55

An accident Saturday slowed traffic on northbound Interstate 55 for several hours. According to Portageville Fire and Rescue, at 3:25 p.m. Saturday Portageville Rescue was paged to northbound Interstate 55 at the 39 mile marker for a two-vehicle accident. Rescue Truck 1 and Engine 3 responded and upon arrival firefighters found a semi-truck which had left right side of roadway and came to a rest in the tree line. The truck had side-swiped a sport utility vehicle, causing it to run off the roadway. There were no serious injuries in either vehicle. Weather conditions at the time were windy with heavy rain. The driver of truck was transported by New Madrid County Ambulance with very minor injuries and all other occupants in the SUV were checked out at scene. Traffic was slowed for several hours until the truck could be removed from the tree line.
