KEWANEE, Mo. — Nathan Gunther Jr., 95, a resident of the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, died Oct. 8, 2019.

Born Nov. 4, 1923, in Kirkwood Springs, Ky., son of the late Nath and Cecillia Capps Gunther, he moved to Pemiscot County in 1936 and graduated from Wardell High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations; he was a retired farmer and a retiree of Noranda Aluminum.

On Sept. 14, 1946, in Hayti, he married Betty Jean Rinker, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 2012.

Survivors include one son, Mike Gunther (Maggie) of Dixon; one daughter, Mary Jane Schneider (Herschel) of East Prairie; one son-in-law, Lynn Akins of Sikeston; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Akins.

Visitation was from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Oct. 12 at Ponder Funeral Home.

Burial followed in the Bernie Cemetery at Bernie, with full military honors.
